How Did We Get Here?
This essay will cover many of the same topics addressed in the video above. That is, virtually no evidence exists in Scripture to support the notion that God will torment some people for an eternity. The natural question to ask is this: Why then have so many people believed in the doctrine of eternal torment for so long?

The Weight of Scripture
Here is where I go into detail regarding the Scriptures that address the eternal fate of unbelievers. With a sincere attempt to be unbiased, I place each passage into one of four categories, and then step back and see what conclusions can be made.

The Countenance of the Father
When you pray, what expression do you imagine on the face of the Father?
This essay will exam the countenance of the Father and stress how important it is for each of us to have an accurate image of that countenance. |
Why does it matter?
This essay will attempt to persuade you that this premise matters. This essay will express my belief that our understanding of the fate of unbelievers impacts these four elements of our lives:
• Our relationship with God • Our internal peace • Our treatment of others • The power of the gospel message |
Approaching the question
In this essay, I explain the approach I take to answering this question about the eternal fate of unbelievers. I examine a couple of examples where people cling to beliefs they were taught by people they trust and respect. Ultimately, we must try to make an unbiased and measured investigation into what the Bible actually says on this topic.

A Rabbit in the Clouds
On some days, we might be able to see an image of a rabbit in the clouds. However, no one would believe it was an actual rabbit. In this essay, I make the case that the doctrine of eternal torment is closer to a rabbit in the clouds than a true teaching of scripture.

The Egregious Error of Eternal Conscious Torment (ECT)
The only way a person can support the doctrine of Eternal Conscious Torment (ECT) is to make an egregious error in interpreting the Bible. In this essay, I explain my reasoning behind that statement.

Epic Failures of Communication
If Jesus and John the Baptist and Peter and Paul intended to express the notion of eternal conscious torment, their efforts were an epic failure to do so. Read this essay to understand why I say so.

II Thessalonians 1:9
In II Thessalonians 1:9, Paul gives a very clear and direct statement that unbelievers will be suffer eternal destruction at the judgment day. Unfortunately, this verse has been mistranslated in some editions of the Bible and the teaching on this verse is not always accurate. This essay will examine this verse in great detail.

The Meaning of Destruction
This essay examines the meaning of destruction language, examining concepts like 'function' and 'existence'. Ultimately, I conclude that we gather the intended meaning of an author based upon the composition of that which is damaged and the nature of the damaging force.
